Third Grade Expectations:
Rules: One of
the objectives for third grade students is to develop personal responsibilty. The student generated rules in our classrooms
center around respect for God, others, self, and property. Consequences will require the student to reflect on the infraction with
an apology of action and/or a loss of privilege (recess minutes). During these recess minutes the student will have a chance
to take a "walk" with his/her teacher to discuss the behavior and what changes need to be made. A
consistent problem will be noted in the plannner or a call home.
Homework: A big change from second to third grade is the addition
of homework. Generally there are daily math, reading, language and spelling assignments. Usually there is ample
time to work on these in class. Fast workers often complete them at school. If they don't, the work is to be brought home
to finish. At any rate, your child should not be spending more than 30 mimutes on average nightly on homework. If nothing
is brought home, use this time for reading, flashcards, or extra spelling practice. Please let your
child's teacher know if there is any concern over either the amount of time spent on homework or the difficulty.
Homework is usually due the next day after assigned. If it is due a different day, that will be noted in the planner
and website. If the homework has not been completed, it will be done during recess and a note made in the planner.
If this is a consistent problem, a phone call home will be made.

Grading
Grades
The grading system is different
in third grade. We use a number system for grading. On some papers and on tests you may see a 1, 2, 3, or 4.
1 means that your child does not meet expectations. A 2 means that the child is progressing toward meeting the expectations.
3 means they meet the expectations and a
4 means they exceed expectations.
There are several papers during the week that are "learning papers". This
means your child is gaining an understanding of what is being worked on. These papers will be handled differently.
On these papers we are just writing the number correct out of the number possible. If your child has had difficulties with
a skill worked on, we try to work with this child to gain a better understanding for the skill. At times we may need your
help to accomplish this and send a paper home to be fixed. This will require your signature, so we know you have seen this
paper.
Our policy on late homework
is as follows:
The first day we become aware of late work we will write a note in your child's planner. If homework completion is a consistent problem, a phone call home may be made.
