Electricity- Key Concepts - Study Guide

•1.     One way to make an electromagnet stronger is to wind the wire more times on the core

•2.     You can build an electromagnet with a D-cell, steel rivet, and wire. You do not need a motor

•3.     In a complete circuit the D-cell supplies the power to the circuit ( the circuits we will be making in class)

•4.     In a complete circuit the switch opens and closes the circuit

•5.     An insulator is a material that does not allow electricity to flow through

•6.     A nail stuck to a permanent magnet can pick up a small washer because magnetism was induced in the nail.

•7.     In a circuit test for insulators and conductors, a light bulb is used to show that electricity is running through the circuit

•8.     Things that conduct electricity : penny, basketball hoop, soup can, aluminum foil

•9.     Something that sticks to magnets but does not conduct electricity is magnetite

•10.                         If you would use a compass to locate a hidden magnet the needle would point right at it.

****There will also be various circuits to identify.  Please refer to study guide which was sent home.
